Mass Finishing Work Piece Handling Series, Part 3 – Maintaining Wear Linings

Adequate wear linings are an important factor in ensuring work pieces are efficiently handled in a mass finishing machine. Along with the method speed of transfer as well as the media selection and separation, the condition of a machine’s wear lining factors into the quality of process results.

Thick linings assist with work piece handling by providing a cushioning effect, yet thin or damaged wear linings allow unwanted knicks, scratches, and dings.

With more than 80 years of expertise in surface finishing, Rosler can assist with all aspects of your mass finishing process including proactively eliminating potential work piece handling issues.

Observing Machine Conditions

Regularly checking the lining of your work bowl(s) and trough(s) for wear is one way to ensure parts don’t get accidentally damaged during processing. Inspecting linings consistently will help identify repairable issues before permanent damage to the machine occurs.

To effectively finish work pieces, media must be matched to the specific finishing task and the initial state of a work piece.

Monitor Wear Linings to Maintain Process Efficiency, Increase Equipment Longevity

Mass finishing machinery is a major investment for most companies. Proper maintenance and preventative repairs over the life of these useful and necessary machines will greatly improve the return on such investments, drive productivity, and extend the working life of the equipment itself.

Rosler stresses the need to regularly inspect the linings of vibratory tubs and troughs to identify repairable issues before permanent damage occurs.

Media-Induced Wear

To effectively finish work pieces, media must be matched to the specific finishing task and initial state of a work piece. For example, media used for deburring/edge radiusing and surface grinding can be very abrasive. If not properly protected by a suitable wear lining, the steel construction of a work bowl would be completely worn through in a few hours by contact with the media and work pieces.

Specifying Polyurethane Qualities Produces Mass Finishing Success

Polyurethane (PU) is an elastomer mix (urethane) material that can be formed into in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and hardnesses. Its uses range from insulation and cushioning to adhesives and car parts and more. PU’s unique ability to withstand tension and compression while maintaining its shape and flexibility makes it a great lining for mass finishing equipment.

The ability to specify the size, shape, and hardness of PU allows equipment manufacturers like Rosler Metal Finishing to build machinery with custom inserts and linings to protect components and enable precise surface finishing as well as relining existing equipment with upgraded lining.

Our expert engineers create a custom blend of shore hardness, PU type, and forming method to produce durable and resilient materials that can withstand the harsh demands and stresses found within mass finishing operations.

Measuring Material Hardness

The shore hardness of PU is measured by the material’s resistance to localized deformation. This hardness or durometer is identified with a durometer tester, which forces a conical shaped indicator into the surface of the material and then measures the depth of the indentation. The scale ranges from 0-100 durometer with many different properties in between.

Mass Finishing Tip 7. Check The Machine Lining Is In Good Condition

Over time the lining of the vibro machine will wear. This will happen more quickly with highly abrasive process media and with sharper / heavier components and very slowly with polishing processes (providing the correct ratios of parts-to-media are adhered to).
